Example author royalties.

Accepted authors will get sent a free copy of how to write non-fiction.  This covers the writing process itself.  This document covers the ethos of Universe of Learning and explains who is responsible for what.
Our motto is

“IT’S ALL ABOUT THE READER”

Who would be considered for publication by Universe of Learning (UoLearn)?

UoLearn is a specialist small publisher concentrating on helping our readers to develop new skills.  We accept only authors who already teach the skills that their book will cover.
Thus, it is highly probable that you will be a trainer, teacher or coach with several years of experience.  We would also consider highly experienced business candidates who may have formally or informally facilitated other people’s learning in the work place.  Initial contact for consideration with a book title, outline of 1000 words and CV can be made by email to editingteam@Uolearn.com.   We suggest, due to spam filters, that you send two emails – one with the attachments and another telling us it has been sent along with your contact details in case the other one is eaten by the ether monsters.  We then will contact you and come to a mutual decision as to whether we can work together.  To help this process please state what time zone and country you are in and suggest a suitable time to call and give a land line number (not cell phone).   Please note that due to volume of work this will be within a week of your email.
We do accept authors from around the world but only publish in English.

What is the ethos of the company?

We would like authors to take the friendly style they use with their learners and convert that to a text based format.   The books are not about the sage on the stage and writing about theories.  They are facilitated learning experiences that take a reader with little or no skill in an area and teach them the skills required to succeed in the topic of the book.  It is expected that many of the books will follow the format, over a space of 4-10 pages, of a bit of background, an easy to follow exercise and a debrief and that much of the book will be taken up by a series of graded exercises to develop skills.  Most of the books we publish are around 150 pages long (and we encourage lots of white space).
We also encourage the use of book and website reviews (from any publisher) within the main text of the book to help the learner find other useful resources.

Where do you publish?

We are based in the UK.  We publish worldwide by ebook and have printing facilities available in the US and UK.  Any book we publish by a British author will usually have international (US) and UK spelling versions, other nationalities will usually just have an international spelling version.  The main website is UoLearn.com which is US hosted to ensure that it is easy to find.

Are you a vanity publisher?

No – we do not ask for any costs from you to cover normal publication.  The only time we ask you pay is for author copies and this would only be after publication.  These are costed exactly at printed and delivered cost plus £1.50 per book (2009 rates) and we always get competitive quotes for longer print runs.  If you wish to consider self-publishing rather than using ourselves we recommend www.lulu.com for print books, www.booklocker.com for print and ebooks and if you are UK based Matador at www.troubador.co.uk/matador

How do you distribute the books?

We are an internet based publisher and sell through established on-line booksellers such as Amazon, Waterstones and Barnes and Noble.  We also sell the books as ebooks from our website www.UoLearn.com.  We list all books on the main databases such as Bowker and Neilson so they can be ordered via shops but we do not distribute copies without firm orders.
We expect authors to provide articles pages for web distribution as this is the best way to rise higher in rankings with search engines.

What services do you provide?

We provide ISBN numbers, catalogue listing, book cover design, print on demand and longer print runs when pre-ordered, editing, final proofreading and marketing support.  We arrange advertising through our own website www.UoLearn.com and support you in marketing your book on line and via review copies, if appropriate.

What’s your background?

We are a small, family run company.  The founding director is Dr Margaret Greenhall (PhD, BSc first class hons, MA (education)), who was a tenured senior chemistry lecturer at a British University for 7 years and then moved sideways into staff development.  She has since run a training company in the area of skills to use your brain better.  She was also sixth in the 2004 world creativity championships!
We are a registered UK limited company based in Lancashire (just north of Manchester and east of Liverpool).  We are also registered under the UK data protection act which has stringent rules about collecting and storing of personal data.

What if I publish with yourselves and then other opportunities arise?

We would be delighted to work with you only if you’re happy with what we are providing.  This is why our contracts have a very unusual clause, for a publisher, in that it can be terminated with 28 days written notice by either party.

What support will I get?

Although we expect you to be experienced teacher/trainer/coach/facilitator we appreciate you may not have written a book before.  Once accepted as an author you’ll be sent a free copy (yours to keep) of how to write non-fiction which also includes a recommended reading list.  When the time scales for writing are agreed you’ll get allocated an editor to work with who’ll provide support during the writing process.
You’re encouraged to write fast and then take the scissors to it later!   Remember you’re not writing war and peace, you’re just taking all that face-to-face experience and converting it to text and pictures.  Post publication we expect you to work with us to market your book as a joint venture.

What format will you need the book in?

All we need is the text in word or as a.txt file.  We then remove all formatting and transfer the text into Adobe InDesign® for copy editing.  The text and images must be kept separately and images should a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and should be in both colour (for the ebooks) and black and white if possible for the printed versions.   You need to be careful to check the copyright on all images that you provide.
We do expect that all authors arrange for at least two suitable proofreaders to check their work.

How long will it take me?

Well you know that piece of string….  Slightly more seriously we encourage authors to get the first draft done in 8 weeks (assuming you’re still out there at the chalk face too).

So sounds great, but let’s get down to the nitty-gritty –

How much money will I get?

Again a slightly unusual contract – the royalty isn’t a set figure of the recommended retail price it’s 50% of the gross profit which is price of sale minus the cost of the sale.  The first 200 books of each version sold also have an administration charge to cover costs.  This means that unlike most publishers books that sell well don’t end up paying for those that don’t sell.
Price of sale – actual payment received by the publisher after any discount off the recommended retail price.
If the book is part of a promotion with other works then the price of sale will be proportional to the promotion. Examples:  If the promotion were buy 3 for the price of 2 then the price of sale will be two thirds of the stated price.  If the promotion was buy one get one free then the price of sale would be half the stated price.
Cost of sale includes printing, postage, handling and selling costs.
The author’s royalty will be 50% of the gross profit on all sales to any party apart from the author themselves.
The table below gives you an indication of what you might receive.
Most publishing companies give a flat royalty of between 5 and 8 % of the RRP.  However, we believe this system is much fairer to you, the author, if slightly more complex to calculate.   You will always be given a detailed listing of sales and a breakdown of the costs with your monthly payment.
No advances are given and royalties are paid in arrears on cleared sales via Paypal in US dollars and other currencies and BACS if in UK pounds (though this can be negotiated if you have alternative solutions that satisfy our security procedures).

Example Author royalties.
Please note this is only a sample list to give an idea of potential royalties, actual figures will vary depending on the RRP, seller discount, postage, size of book, other costs and number of pages.
This is based on a 150 page book with an RRP of 12.99 and prices as of July 2009.
The table is shown for UK pounds but similar percentages apply in other countries, postage external to the country of production may be much higher.
Please note the first 200 books of each imprint/data sort incur extra costs per copy.
The amount you receive depends very much on the format and venue that it is sold through.
Author/s are welcome to become associates of UoLearn and refer sales from your website.  Associate agreements will be made separately to this contract.  The percentage paid to associates may vary, the 10% shown is an example.
